Smoothies are super popular and with very good reason. They are a quick and easy way to get more fresh produce, of all colors, into your diet.
They are delicious too and make the perfect meal or snack when you’re in a rush. Since they are so versatile, it’s easy to find smoothie recipes that you love and can enjoy every single day.
Let’s look at the three different types of smoothies you can make. You might be familiar with the first two, as these are the most popular.
But, the third type, although not as common, is also a great addition to your repertoire, particularly if you love your veggies.
Fruit Smoothies
The first place to start is with simple fruit smoothies. Mix up one or two of your favorite types of fruit with some ice and a little milk (dairy or non dairy) or yogurt.
It makes a refreshing and sweet drink that’s similar to a milkshake but better for you. Fruit and yogurt smoothies also make for a wonderful, portable breakfast option.
These types of smoothies work well with both fresh and frozen fruit. This means you can make all year round.
For a more filling smoothie, try adding some Greek yogurt, peanut butter, or even a scoop of protein powder. The extra boost of protein will fill you up for longer.

Try this fruit smoothie for breakfast:
Strawberry Banana Smoothie
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 banana
- 6 frozen strawberries
- ½ cup of orange juice
Add everything to your blender and blend until smooth. This makes one serving to replace a meal like breakfast. Two small servings make a delicious snack.
Green Smoothies
Green smoothies have become very popular in recent years, along with green juices. They are a wonderful way to work more leafy greens and raw veggies into your diet. For many this is much more preferable than having to eat “another salad”.
You can work quite a bit of greens along with their fiber and nutrients into your diet with green smoothies. Enjoy one of these daily and you will tick many boxes for the recommended intake of vitamins and minerals.
Green smoothies make a great lunch too. Blend it in the morning, and store the smoothie in the fridge. When lunch time comes, shake it up and enjoy. It will provide lots of nutrients without leaving you stuffed and tired.
For best results mix and match your greens and veggies from day to day.
Here’s a simple green smoothie recipe to get you started:
Simple Green Smoothie
- 1 small or half a medium banana, sliced and frozen
- 1/2 cup pineapple chunks
- 1/2 cup low fat, plain Greek yogurt
- Splash of skim milk (you can also use coconut milk, soy milk, almond milk)
- 3/4 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 1 to 1 ½ cups baby spinach
- Ice
Add all ingredients to your blender. Blend until smooth.
Savory Smoothies
And now we come to savory smoothies – the one you may not have tried before. Most smoothies are sweet because of the addition of fruit. But it doesn’t have to be this way!
You can also enjoy savory smoothies that taste more like cold vegetable soup. They are particularly refreshing and energizing in warmer months.
For example you can mix up a Gazpacho (Spanish cold tomato soup) inspired smoothie. Or whip up a smoothie that tastes like salsa. Play around with different veggies, seasonings, liquids and even apple cider vinegar. Try tomato juice, chicken or vegetable broth for variation.
Here is a savory smoothie that a few skeptics have tried and enjoyed. Give it a go!
Tangy Tomato Smoothie
- 1 tomato
- 1 stick celery
- 1 scallion
- 1 small cucumber, peeled
- 1/2 red capsicum
- 1/2 cup tomato juice
- Lemon juice, to taste
- Tabasco sauce, to taste
Roughly chop all the vegetables. Add them all to your blender along with juices and Tabasco. Blend until smooth. Season to taste.
If you would prefer a little bit of sweetness in your savory smoothie, add some apple juice or chopped apple. Try to reduce this in time and enjoy a real ‘savory’ taste.
If you haven’t already, give all the different types of smoothies a try. Start with the recipes above and then start to tweak them. Change the ingredients around and experiment. You will come up with your own personal collection of smoothies that you love. And the good thing is, they will also fulfil your nutritional needs.
