Rosehip Oil for Anti Aging…Is It Really That Good?

Using rosehip oil for anti aging is something that Miranda Kerr, The Duchess of Cambridge, Gwyenth Paltrow and Victoria Beckham all have in common.  While that is some great endorsement for the oil, is it really that good?

Rosehip oil (not to be confused with rose oil) is extracted from the fruit or ‘hip’ of the rose after it’s flowered and the petals have dropped.  It is not an essential oil, but a carrier oil that is the skincare choice of many celebrities because of its ability to keep their skin free of blemishes, wrinkles and dryness.

Let’s take a look at what is so great (if anything) about rosehip oil for anti aging and how you can use it.

Why Is Rosehip Oil Good for Your Skin?

Rosehip oil is loaded with nutrients that are all good for your skin.  These include essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants, all of which help to improve skin condition and appearance.

The fatty acids in rosehip oil, linoleic and linolenic acid, help keep skin hydrated.  They work to strengthen cell walls and minimize the loss of fluid.  This makes it not only great for helping dry, itching skin but also maintaining hydration for any type of skin.  The fatty acids also act as emollients helping to improve skin flexibility

Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C, E and K are all present in rosehip oil.  While each has different roles to play, together they make it a regenerative and healing oil suitable for all skin types.  The vitamins help with regenerating cells, improving elasticity and boosting radiance.

Antioxidants also add to the skin enhancing properties of rosehip oil.  They help to lighten skin (lycopene, beta-carotene), stimulate collagen production (Vitamin C) and improve skin texture and tone (Vitamin A).

Is Rosehip Oil Good for Aging Skin?

Thanks to the properties listed above, the anti aging benefits of rosehip oil are impressive.  While rosehip oil can be used on any skin, it is particularly good in improving aging skin.  It works to increase moisture levels while reducing the visible signs of aging.  Here’s why:

  • The high levels of antioxidants in rosehip oil, make it one of the best fighters of free radicals. Protecting your skin against free radicals will help alleviate visible signs of aging such as sun damaged and wrinkled skin.
  • Rosehip oil’s fatty acids are readily absorbed into the skin and help to lock in moisture and keep skin hydrated.  This re-hydration keeps aging skin soft and supple.
  • Collagen production is stimulated by the high Vitamin C content in rosehip oil.   Collagen functions to maintain skin strength and elasticity while reducing dry skin and wrinkles.  It has a big role to play in the aging of skin.

Is Rosehip Oil Good for Your Face?

The short answer to this question is yes!  There is a lot to love about rosehip oil when it comes to improving your skin and for all the reasons outlined above, it is definitely good for your face.

While it might seem strange to apply an oil to your face, rosehip oil is quite different in structure to mineral or petroleum based oils.  Its fine chemical structure means it is easily absorbed into the skin and doesn’t just create a slick on top of it.

Even oily skin can benefit from rosehip oil as it helps to re-balance it and promote healthy cell function.

How to Use Rosehip Oil on Your Face

It is important to note that everyone’s skin can react differently.  So, it is a good idea to test any new products before going all out, particularly if you have any skin sensitivities or allergies.  Also, if you have reacted to skin products in the past, this is always a good idea.

To test rosehip oil, do a patch test by applying a small amount to the inside of your elbow.  Wait 48 to 72 hours.  If there is no itchiness, swelling or redness, you are good to go.

Rosehip oil is classified as a ‘dry’ oil so it will absorb quickly into the skin.  You only need a few drops at a time.  Apply it to clean, dry skin and dab or gently massage in.  Allow a few minutes for it to absorb into the skin.

It can be used twice a day, morning and night – whatever works best for your routine.

Using rosehip oil as a night treatment is very popular.  While you sleep, it can get to work rejuvenating and improving your skin.  Even if you only use it at night, you will definitely notice a difference in your skin within a week.  Your skin will be softer, more even in color and lines reduced.

Another use for rosehip oil on your face is as a makeup remover.  Even heavy eye makeup can be easily removed and the oil leaves your face dewy and clean.  YES, it is OK to use rosehip oil around the eye area.  Just ensure you apply it gently and don’t use too much.

Should You Use Rosehip Oil Before or After Moisturizer

As rosehip oil becomes part of your beauty routine, you can use it to REPLACE your moisturizer.  Or, you may choose to use it with your moisturizer for an extra boost, particularly at night.  Experiment to see what works best for you an your existing skincare products.

If using it with a moisturizer, it is best to use it BEFORE and allow it to absorb into your skin.  This way your skin will enjoy the full benefits before applying other products.  If you don’t have time to allow it to fully absorb, dab off any excess with tissues and then apply your moisturizer.

You can also use rosehip oil as a serum that complements your moisturizer.  Serums are applied before moisturizing to maximize benefits.

How to Store Rosehip Oil

All the great components of rosehip oil unfortunately reduce its shelf life and it can go rancid quickly.  It is best stored in a dark, cool place to maximize shelf life.  It can also be stored in the refrigerator.

After using rosehip oil, put the lid back on straight away and put it back in the refrigerator or dark storage.  This will help to maintain its freshness.

Different rosehip products can have different shelf lives.  Some have Vitamin E added to extend the shelf life of the oil.  In this case the rosehip oil will last up to two years.

In contrast, pure rosehip oil, with no additives, can be stored for up to 6 months.

What to Look for When Buying Rosehip Oil

There are many brands and sizes of rosehip oil available.  Buy the best quality your budget will allow, and if it is possible, buy cold pressed, organic rosehip oil like these.  This ensures the highest quality and purity along with best results.

As mentioned above, some products will have an additive to extend the shelf life of rosehip oil.  If you would prefer the pure product, look for this on the label.  It may be preferable to buy smaller bottles more often, without additive.

It is also best if rosehip oil comes in dark bottles that minimize light exposure.  This will extend the shelf life and maximize freshness of the oil.

Using rosehip oil for anti aging is worth considering, and yes, it really is that good!  With so many beneficial components available in rosehip oil, it is a natural powerhouse for skin of any type, in particular aging skin.  Give it a try and see your skin thrive.
