The Best Essential Oils To Wake Up With

It is easy to use essential oils only when you feel the need – your mood could do with a boost, you’re feeling stressed or not feeling well. But, I think one of the most powerful ways to use them is regularly in your daily routine. This way they become a ‘habit’ and you get to enjoy the benefits on a daily basis.

One of the best places to start is in the morning. Adding essential oils into your morning routine is really a great way to kick off the day.

Use single oils or essential oil blends you feel will best support you during the day ahead and get a real head start. You won’t need the stimulation of coffee (although there is no need to give it up) or other morning pick-me-ups.

Using essential oils to wake up in the morning will be all the stimulation you need. Let’s take a look at the best essential oils for waking up in the morning and how to use them.

The Best Essential Oils for Waking Up

Citrus: The fresh, clean scent of citrus will refresh you instantly to start the day. All the citrus oils – Lemon, Grapefruit, Lime, Bergamot and Orange – are stimulating and will put a pep in your step.

Peppermint: Not just for toothpaste, the uplifting scent of peppermint will open your eyes and get your day off to a refreshing start.

Spearmint:  Similar to peppermint, but not quite as strong, Spearmint is a refreshing and stimulating oil.  Perfect if you are feeling a bit of mental fatigue.

Rosemary:  Definitely an oil to get you up and moving in the morning, Rosemary is the activating oil.  If you start your day with exercise or movement, Rosemary is a great choice.

Lemongrass:  An energy booster, Lemongrass is cleansing and strengthening.  Everything you need first thing in the morning.

How to Use Essential Oils to Wake Up

To help you wake up and get moving, there are many different methods to help these stimulating scents reach you.  Choose one or more and mix it up to suit your routine.  Each is easy to do and make into a regular habit.

Inhalation

A deep inhalation of essential oils, right up into your nose will really get you started. There are a few ways to do this:

  • Breathe directly from the bottle. If it is a bit strong, use a wafting motion to diffuse the scent slightly.
  • Put a few drops onto a handkerchief or tissue and breathe it in. Take it with you and keep breathing it in while you get on with the day.

Diffusion

Put a few drops of oil into your diffuser and set it up to go in the kitchen or whatever room you will be in while preparing for the day. Choose one oil, or try experimenting with different combinations.

There are lots of other benefits to diffusing essential oils too. If you don’t have a diffuser, check out my top recommendations here.

Diffuser Alarm Clocks

An aromatherapy diffuser alarm clock goes even one step further. Like a regular alarm clock, they make a noise when it is time to wake up. Instead of rolling over and going back to sleep, switch on the diffuser, already loaded up with stimulating scents to help make getting up easier.

They may also have the added benefit of timers, so if using it when going to bed, essential oils aren’t diffused during the night.

In The Shower

Using essential oils in the shower is one of my favourite ways. Again, there are a few different options here:

  • Put a few drops of oil/s on the shower floor, not where the main stream of water flows, but to the side. As the shower area heats up, the essential oils will vaporize and you can breathe in the scent.
  • Add a few drops to your loofah or wash cloth and rub into your body while washing.
  • Shower tablets – buy them here or see how to make your own here. Drop them onto the shower floor and breathe in.

Lotions and Body Products

Another way to add some aromatherapy to your morning routine is by using specially scented soaps, body washes, lotions, and more. Look for ones that include the essential oils listed above. There are so many options available to buy or make, but here is the recipe for one of my favourites.

Invigorating Body Rub

  • Add a few drops of essential oil to a teaspoon of massage base oil or moisturiser (this is best done in a small dish).
  • Mix it together and then, starting from the legs, massage the scented oil into your entire body. Work your way up and breathe in the aroma as you go.
  • This is ideally done right after a shower.

Note: Lemon, Lime and Bergamot are photosensitive so avoid if you will be exposed to UV light.

Conclusion

Aromatherapy is not just for using every now and again when the urge strikes.  It’s also not just for relieving stress or using in massages. The right scents can wake you up and help you get your day started. By making a habit of using essential oils in your morning routine, you will feel energised and stimulated.  What a great way to wake up and start the day!
