What Is The Best Coconut Oil For Pulling

Oil pulling is enjoying a rise in popularity, and for good reason. It is a natural way to greatly improve oral health and can help with tartar build-up, breath odor, and yellowing or stained teeth.

Plus, when your oral health is improved, your overall health and well being will benefit as well. This is because many systems are linked to the oral cavity so they too get a boost from this practice.

If the whole idea of oil pulling sounds a bit strange, don’t worry. It did to me too at first but it is super easy to do. Below is all you need to know about why you should consider oil pulling plus how to do it. So let’s get started.

But First, A Word of Caution…

Before getting started with oil pulling, you should first be aware that it is not a miracle cure. And as a precaution, it is important to keep a couple of things in mind.

You are using a completely natural oil for oil pulling and it isn’t going to harm you in any way. But, don’t think that this practice will fix all your dental issues.

While it definitely has a lot of benefits, it is not going to be a miracle cure that keeps you from going to the dentist.

You still need to brush and floss your teeth daily, watch your diet, and visit your dentist. If you don’t, the regular side effects for neglecting your oral health will still be there.

Benefits of Oil Pulling

There are a lot of benefits to oil pulling that make it worthwhile and include the following:

  • Healthy mouth and teethFights tooth decay
  • Whitens teeth
  • Freshens breath
  • Reduces plaque and tartar build up
  • Gives a clean mouth feel
  • Reduces bleeding or swollen gums
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Improves immune system

The long term benefits are determined by your own dental health and how often you do it. You can certainly achieve these benefits and see great results in the short term.

But only by committing to a long term practice of oil pulling will the benefits be ongoing. Plus, it is only in the longer term that general health benefits, such as improving your immune system, will be realized.

Best Coconut Oil For Pulling

The main oils used for oil pulling are sesame, olive and coconut oil. I prefer the latter as it has an amazing ability to fight bacteria – something our mouths are full of. Plus, simply by pulling coconut oil, you can enjoy many of its other health benefits as well.

While there are several types of coconut oil available, the best coconut oil for pulling is virgin coconut oil. It is raw, natural and has not been refined or tampered with in any way. You will find it is often solid, particularly in cooler temperatures.

For oil pulling, don’t choose refined or fractionated coconut oils. These types are fine for other purposes, but for oral health, may not have the same benefits.

How To Do Oil Pulling

Now let’s talk about how you actually do oil pulling. Get your coconut oil ready and follow the steps below.

1. Take a couple of tablespoons of virgin coconut oil and put it in your mouth. If it is solid initially, give it a bit of a chew to liquify the oil.

2. Now ‘swish’ it around in your mouth, really working hard to push and pull between your teeth. This is where the magic happens, you are actually ‘pulling’ all the bad stuff out and into the oil.

3. Continue ‘swishing’ and ‘pulling’ for 20 minutes. When you are done, spit the oil out and dispose of it.

4. Rinse your mouth straight away with warm water.

5. Brush your teeth normally.

If you’re still not sure about the process, here is a great video from Dr Axe showing how to do oil pulling.  He also mentions using essential oils with coconut oil for even greater benefits.

The more you do oil pulling, the more you will benefit. Try to do it a few times a week to maximize results.

When first starting, it is even OK to do it every day for a couple of weeks. If you can’t do it for 20 minutes, start slow at around 5-10 minutes then gradually work your way up.

Give it a try and…
…Smile 🙂
